French Bill: Ban on Products Containing PFAS

France aims to ban the use of consumer products containing PFAS with the law adopted on February 27, 2025. As of January 1, 2026, there will be restrictions on the use of PFAS in textiles, while all PFAS-containing textiles will be banned as of January 1, 2030. French Bill Bans Products Containing PFAS

France has introduced new regulations on the use of products containing PFAS (perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances) to protect public health. Law 2025-188, adopted on February 27, 2025, aims to take a strong step against the negative effects of these chemicals on the environment and human health.

Key Articles of the Law:

  • Ban on Products Containing PFAS: As of January 1, 2026, the production, import, sale and placing on the market of textile products containing PFAS will be banned.
  • Additional Restrictions on Textile Products: The use of PFAS will be banned, especially in clothing, footwear and water-resistant products. However, products specifically designed for national defense and security will be exempt from this ban.
  • Environmental Taxation: A tax of 100 euros per 100 grams of PFAS will be imposed on producers who emit PFAS. This measure aims to reduce PFAS emissions.

Critical Dates

  • January 1, 2026: Date when textiles containing PFAS will be banned.
  • January 1, 2030: A blanket ban on all textiles containing PFAS. However, exceptions will be made for products used in vital areas such as national sovereignty and defense.

The law aims to limit the use of PFAS and reduce their release into the environment. However, further regulations are expected to determine details such as exemptions and residue thresholds.
