Ecodesign and Energy Labeling Roadmap for 2025-2030 from the European Commission

The European Commission has published its Work Plan for Ecodesign and Energy Labeling for the period 2025-2030, identifying product groups such as textiles, furniture, and detergents as priority areas. The plan aims to support sustainability by extending product lifespans, improving material efficiency, and enhancing information requirements for consumers. A specific environmental assessment study for footwear will be completed by the end of 2027.
European Commission, April 16, 2025

On April 16, 2025, the European Commission published the “Ecodesign and Energy Labeling Work Plan for Sustainable Products 2025-2030”, clarifying its environmental sustainability targets for the next five years. This plan defines priority product groups and the work to be carried out on these products under the Ecodesign Directive (ESPR) and the Energy Labeling Framework Regulation (ELFR).

The main product groups to be focused on under the plan include clothing, footwear, textiles, furniture, mattresses, detergents and paint. Particularly for textiles, the aim is to extend product life, increase material efficiency and reduce water, energy consumption and waste generation. In this process, synergies between product information requirements and the Textile Labeling Regulation are planned.

Footwear is considered in a separate category due to its different material structure, usage pattern and supply chain structure. Therefore, a footwear-specific study will be conducted until the end of 2027 to identify potential areas for improvement in terms of environmental sustainability.

The Plan not only provides technical regulations, but also prioritizes consumer information. Product information requirements aim to support consumers to make more sustainable choices.

This comprehensive work plan is seen as an important step in achieving Europe’s circular economy goals. Detailed information is available on the official website of the European Commission.
