The European Union significantly stepped up inspections of products that threaten consumer safety in 2025, stopping the highest number of dangerous products before they reach the market in its history. According to data from the European Commission’s Safety Gate (Rapid Alert System), more than 4,600 risk notifications were made during the year, a remarkable increase compared to previous years.
Cosmetic products, children’s toys and electrical appliances were among the most risky product groups as a result of the inspections. Chemical ingredients, which pose a serious threat to human health, accounted for more than half of the reported risks. Products containing substances banned under EU legislation were withdrawn or banned from sale before being placed on the market.
The report reveals that the rapid growth of e-commerce and the increase in the volume of products coming from outside the EU have further increased the importance of cross-border inspections. The fact that the majority of notifications originate from third countries has put the critical role of online marketplaces in product safety back on the agenda. Authorities emphasize the need to strengthen monitoring systems and clarify the chain of responsibility to protect consumers.
